Paret lost the 7th round due to low blows, it was felt that this was one of his best rounds and likely cost him the decision. During the round, Paret staggered Moyer with a right hand near the end of the round. Moyer had boxed effectively with his jab, counterpunching Paret, who was more effective when the fight went to the inside during the middle rounds.
Poll of ringside reporters showed five favoring Paret, four favoring Moyer, and one scoring the bout a draw.
Moyer is the #4 rated contender in the Welterweight division, entering the bout.

- Before the fight Moyer stated that this would be his last bout at welterweight as he could no longer make 147. However, after the fight, both he and his manager Sid Flaherty agreed they would try to make the limit if it meant a title shot.
