Denny Moyer 149 lbs beat Gaspar Ortega 146 lbs by SD in round 10 of 10

"The first TV fight of 1959 apparently will go into the records as a split decision for young Denny Moyer over welterweight contender Gaspar Ortega, since there was no official protest today. Most of the sportswriters at ringside in MSG last night were flabbergasted by the verdict that gave unbeaten Moyer of Portland, Ore., his 19th straight professional victory in his eastern debut. Moyer boxed brilliantly and displayed an excellent left jab and a fast right uppercut, although no power in his punches. However, the swarthy Ortega forced the action in every round and landed the harder punches. It appeared in the 5th, 7th and 9th sessions that Denny might be stopped." -United Press International

  • The controversial decision followed a late betting switch that sent Moyer into the ring favored at 6-5, whereas earlier he had been the underdog ranging out as far as 13-5.
