"Jimmy Lester, the rising youngster from the Bay View District, missed his first hurdle in 17 trips to the post when 'Irish' Denny Moyer of Portland, Oregon, set Jimmy's title express back temporarily with a split decision victory. It was a fast-paced thriller from the opening bell with the ring-savvy Moyer, at 158, never letting the stronger Lester, 156, get untracked. Every time Lester would start a two-fisted barrage, Moyer would stop in close and rip an uppercut to his chin and then lean into him with body punches. In the 3rd round, Moyer seemed to slip and while doing so, was tagged with a Lester right and went down. Referee Fred Apostoli called it a knockdown. Moments later the two collided in mid-ring and Moyer went down again, this time from an obvious slip. Moyer's best round was the 6th when he stopped Lester charging in several times with jolting right hands. The final session was a rouse with both fighters exchanging combinations, with Lester's hurting Moyer with a left hook midway through." -San Mateo Times
