Dick Burke was one of the many top-class United Kingdom fighters of the 1930s. He was a product of the Everton Red Triangle Club and only had a handful of amateur bouts before turning professional at 16 in 1929 and, in a ring career which was only ended by the War in 1939, had many memorable moments. He twice fought great hall-of-fame champion Panama Al Brown. He lost their first clash at Sheffield on points over 12 rounds in 1932 and, in a return bout, was stopped in the 12th and final round with an eye injury. Dick told boxing writer Syd Dye of the Liverpool Record in the early 1980s, “Referee Arthur Myers later admitted to me he had made a mistake by stopping the contest with only a few minutes remaining. He knew the injury wasn’t too bad but thought the bout was over 15 rounds and the swelling would only worsen.”
