He was born July 11, 1933, in Dodge County. He married Marlene Weathery on Dec. 15, 1951, in Kasson. He had lived in Rochester since 1951, and Kasson before that. He was a carpenter and drove truck for Mayflower. Mr. Cotten was a Navy veteran and a member of American Legion Post No. 92 and the VFW. He was a Golden Gloves boxer and boxed professionally.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene; four children, Debra (Terry) Lukes of Eyota, Durk Cotten of Byron, Roger (Lorie) Cotten of Rochester and Kristi (Dennie) Himle of Claremont; five brothers, Alvin Unger of Racine, Wis., Daverl (Evelyn) Cotten of Vancouver, Wash., Harvey (Karen) Cotten of Rochester, Larry (Pat) Cotten of Racine, Minn., and Randy (Deb) Cotten of Racine; a sister, Lila Hanson of Rochester; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother and a great-grandchild.
