"A body blow thrown in desperation of a losing battle doubled up the veteran Harry (Kid) Matthews of Seattle last night and put the British heavyweight champion Don Cockell on the road to a 10-round split decision victory. Cockell, who outweighed Harry by 31 1/2 pounds, was bleeding from a deep gash over his left cheekbone and seemed all but whipped after eight rounds. Then he caught Harry with the sweeping smash to the midsection and blasted the Seattle veteran on the jaw before he hit the canvas in the first of three 9-count knockdowns in that decisive 9th round. Harry piled up the points from the start, evading Cockell and punishing him with sharp jabs and hooks. In the 6th he opened a cut on the Londoner's cheek and he kept it bleeding for three rounds. Early in the 9th Cockell landed his payoff punch. The 3rd knockdown of the round almost knocked Harry through the ropes. The bell ended the 9th round massacre but Matthews came back strongly in the 10th." -Associated Press

- "I thought one reason the referee gave me the edge was that he was in a position to see that many of Matthews' jabs landed high on the head." -Don Cockell
- "Cockell knows a lot more about fighting than Marciano, and it's hard to get through to hit him." -Harry Matthews
