"Don Cockell dreamed Saturday night of an early whack at Rocky Marciano's heavyweight title after his lethal fists - with an assist from a slipped sacroiliac - disposed of Harry (Kid) Matthews Friday night in the 8th stanza of a scheduled 10-round fight. Matthews, unable to stand erect because of his damaged back, could not come out for the 8th against the British Empire champion, who outweighed him 210 1/2 pounds to 180. Cockell had the edge all the way and the crowd thought it was his head-hunting attack which left Matthews helpless. The 32 year old Matthews was bleeding from the mouth, nose and ear as he slumped to his stool at the end of the 7th. Cockell, from London, for whom this was a third triumph over the same enemy, felt this fight was his best of the three after taking command from the start." -Associated Press
