"Puerto Rican born Jose Gonzalez took the American middleweight title from Don Fullmer with a slashing body attack that earned him a unanimous 12 round decision at MSG Friday night. The 25 year old Gonzalez, ranked No. 1 contender by the WBA, took the play from Fullmer from the start with his steaming pokes to the body and scored a controversial knockdown in the 8th round, the only knockdown of the lively scrap. A pro-Gonzalez crowd of about 4,500 roared when a seemingly light left and right to the head dropped Fullmer. His gloves touched the floor but he straightened up quickly. It looked like he went down more from a slip than the punches, but referee Johnny LoBianco ruled it was a knockdown." -Associated Press
- Unofficial AP scorecard - 8-4 Gonzalez
