"Don Fullmer piled up a big lead over wild-swinging Juan (Rocky) Rivero and then held on to gain a split decision over the Argentine in a 10 round television fight at MSG Saturday night. Rivero, a hard-hitting middleweight who had scored six straight KOs and kayoed 35 of his 44 opponents, couldn't hurt the kid brother of middleweight champ Gene Fullmer until the 9th round. It was too late by then. Fullmer, West Jordan, Utah, dominated the first half of the fight by meeting Rivero's bull-like charges with snapping left jabs to the head and fast left and right combinations to the head and body. This big advantage barely held up as the Argentine rallied strongly in the second half of the fight. There were no knockdowns." -Associated Press
- Unofficial AP scorecard 6-4 Fullmer
- Referee Jimmy Devlin penalized Fullmer the 9th round for holding.
- It was speculated that Fullmer may have broken a bone in his right hand, saying that he hurt it in the 5th and 8th rounds, but he was ready to go again in October against Emile Griffith.
