Don Fullmer 157 lbs lost to Ted Wright 153 lbs by TKO in round 7 of 10

"Ted Wright of Detroit blasted young Don Fullmer's dreams Saturday night by stopping Don for the first time in his career at the end of the 7th round because of a badly cut left brow. Referee Harold Valan awarded Wright a TKO victory at the end of the 7th at the suggestion of Dr. Alexander Swetnik and at the request of Fullmer's manager Marv Jensen. Wright opened the cut with a right to the head in the 4th round. In the 7th, Wright gave Don a terrific battering and had him staggering groggily about the ring and holding on. Just as the bell sounded for the 8th round, referee Valan waved his arms that the fight was over." -United Press International

  • Wright was a substitute for Benny (Kid) Paret, who injured his right shoulder in training 3 days before this contest.
  • Had he won, Fullmer was penciled in for an October 14th bout with Sugar Ray Robinson in Madison Square Garden.
