"Los Angeles' 'Geronimo Kid' of boxing, Don Jordan, wrested Virgil Akins' world welterweight title at the Olympic Auditorium last night. A slim crowd watched Jordan wear down the hard-hitting Akins and beat him to a pulp with a jarring left jab and a right that hooked and crossed with devastating results. An underdog who wasn't supposed to last more than a few rounds, Jordan scored one of modern boxing's most startling upsets. Jordan kept the champion off balance with a busy left jab and hit him with the right - almost exclusively to the head. The champion had points taken away from him on two different rounds for butting but there should have been many more. He also landed several low blows, especially in the 15th round, when he hurt Jordan badly. Akins was roundly booed throughout the fight, and particularly so while the decision was being awaited." -Pasadena Star-News
