Donald "Donnie" Hamilton, 87, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on September 4, 2026, after courageously fighting a long illness. Donnie was a life-long resident of the Syracuse area. He retired from Onondaga County in 1997 after 35 years of service, 29 years as Director of Physical Services for the Health Department. He also served on the Town of Onondaga Planning Board and as Town Councilman for 28 years.

Those who knew Donnie knew his love for boxing and politics. He joined the Syracuse Boys Club boxing team and flourished as an amateur, fighting throughout Central New York before deciding to turn professional. Although a car accident ended his dream of a professional boxing career, his involvement in the sport continued. He became assistant head coach of the Syracuse Boys' Club boxing team, guiding many local amateur standouts to titles. His coaching success led to his being named twice to coach the United States boxing team in international competition. He later served as a referee at the War Memorial. Donnie was a noted boxing historian and valuable advisor to the International Boxing Hall of Fame, where he served as Vice President of the Board of Directors.
