Dorin Spivey Versus Victor Vasquez NABA Lightweight Championship
At age 38, but looking 28, veteran Dorin Spivey won the vacant NABA lightweight title with a seventh round stoppage with a game but overmatched Victor Vasquez of Philadelphia, in the main event of a nine bout card at Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on February 4, 2012, televised over the internet on gofightlive.tv. Spivey used a consistent jab to win the first few rounds, utilizing height and reach advantage and hand speed to keep Vasquez away. Frustrated, Vasquez turned to a 'Plan B' and took the fight to the inside, mixing body work with a lot of wrestling and clinches to fight his type of fight. However, Spivey picked up the tempo and began landing power shots to the head. Vasquez had a big heart, and would not go, though, and landed some good counters to stay in the fight. he was taking a bad beating in a corner when the referee stopped in the seventh. Vasquez might have survived the ten round distance, but he was taking a lot of mostly unanswered shots and could have been seriously hurt, and consensus at ringside was Vasquez would have another day. In a ringside surprise after the bout, Spivey was challenged by local Atlantic City favorite Osnel Charles, who beat Vasquez previously. Spivey and Charles talked friendly and appeared open to a bout later in 2012 for the title.
Before the bout, the memorial ten count was held in the ring remembering Joe Frazier, trainer Angelo Dundee, and referee Wayne Kelly who recently passed away.
Ringside celebrities included former super feather champ Joey Gamache, former junior middleweight champion Buster Drayton, and middleweight Patrick Majewski.
