"Doug Vaillant, Cuban-born lightweight contender, scored two knockdowns enroute to a 10 round decision over European lightweight champion Dave Charnley of Britain tonight at Wembley Stadium. The fight took a dramatic turn in the 9th, when Vaillant caught Charnley with a tremendous right hand which dropped him for a count of nine. Charnley, with blood streaming from his nose, staggered to his feet and managed to hold on until the bell. Charnley came out full of vigor in the 10th but Vaillant softened him up again with straight lefts and then crashed the Briton to the floor with another right. This time for a count of eight." -Associated Press
