"Ninth ranked featherweight contender Dwight Hawkins of Los Angeles battled to a bloody 10 round draw Thursday night with 10th ranked Bobby Valdez of San Diego. Hawkins, down from a right to the head in the opening round and cut over the left eye, had Valdez almost helpless in the final round, although he was unable to score a knockdown. The two little sluggers fought toe-to-toe in almost every round. Hawkins hurt Valdez with flurries to the head and body in the 7th, but Valdez bounced back to cut Hawkins' eye in the next round. Valdez bled from the nose from the 8th round." -United Press International
