"'Lefty' Barrera goes on a well-earned vacation today, after one of the three toughest fights he has had in his 21 bout pro career. Barrera, pinned against the ropes all night and frustrated, wore down the very tough Dwight Hawkins of Los Angeles for a 9th round TKO of the scheduled 10 round main event last night in Memorial Coliseum. Barrera, of Robstown, had to fight Hawkins' fight, for the Los Angeles veteran pressed Lefty from the opening bell to the last. Finally in the 8th, Barrera belted Hawkins from rope to rope with a two-fisted attack that set up the 9th round finisher. In the 9th, Barrera knocked Hawkins through the ropes with a right uppercut and left hook, then pounded him to the floor with a flurry of punches. Referee Mike Delaney stopped it at 1:11 of the 9th." -Corpus Christi Times
