Dwight Hawkins 124 lbs beat Noel Humphreys 127 lbs by MD in round 10 of 10

"Dwight Hawkins didn't score his usual knockout at Hollywood Legion Stadium, but he learned an awful lot while scoring a clear decision over rough-house Noel Humphries in the 10 round main event. Noel had a big advantage in height and reach, plus a few pounds in heft. Despite this edge, he refused to mix it with the deadly-punching Dwight, wrapping himself around Hawkins like an anaconda." -Ring Magazine, April 1959 issue

  • Hawkins' manager, Jake Shugrue - complaining that all bantams had been avoiding his natural bantamweight, thus forcing him to fight featherweights - posted a $500 forfeit check with the California state Athletic Commission, challenging for the State bantamweight title. Hawkins was then nominated to fight for the vacant title in his very next fight.
