Huff served in the Army during World War in the Pacific Theater with an all-black battalion.
After his boxing career, Huff became a priest in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in 1950. He was later elected as a bishop in 1978, serving congregations in the Northeast United States. Huff was a civil rights activist during the 1960s in Newark, amid the city's riots.
