Eddie Burnbrook was born Edward Berenbrok, the eleventh of thirteen children, according to George Berenbrok, a great-nephew.

Per the April 20, 1972 News American (Maryland): He had just celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary. He had won the Welterweight Championship of the U. S. Army three consecutive years: 1921-23. He had joined the Army at age 17. Following service in Europe during World War I, he was stationed at Fort Holabird, where he began his boxing career. He reportedly had 44 knockout wins in his first 53 bouts, including 17 first-round KOs. His career total as a welterweight reportedly was 83 wins (60 by KO), and 8 losses. He then became a middleweight in 1924, eventually winning the West Coast (Pacific Coast) title in a 12-round bout with Joe Roche.

Berenbrok was also a noted football player, playing in the half-back position. He was selected to the 1921 All-Maryland service team that went undefeated against touring service teams. His team was coached by Army Capt. Dwight D. Eisenhower (later Allied Commander during WWII and future United States President).
