According to the 1960 Ring Record Book (p. 561) Dixon retired from boxing after an appointment to the Newark Police force.

Note: Eddie Dixon was a member of the Newark, NJ Police Department. On January 17, 1959 he was ordered to appear at a departmental hearing on January 30, 1959 for violating one of the department's rules by engaging in outside business. The 25-year-old Dixon lost a decision on January 9, 1959 to Gene (Ace) Armstrong in the main event at Madison Square Garden. Dixon, a member of the police force for nine months earned $4,500 a year. His gross pay for the Armstrong fight was approximately $5,000. On January 30, 1959 Dixon retired from boxing when he told Police Director Joseph F. Weldon that he had reached his decision - to remain a member of Newark's Police Department. On February 7, 1959 Police Director Joseph F. Weldon suspended the 25-year-old Dixon for ten days without pay for violating the department's rule against engaging in outside business.
