"Eighth-ranking heavyweight contender Eddie Machen, 197, took an awkward, lumbering step along his comeback trail toward a title shot Saturday night with a 9th round knockout over Pittsburgh's Alonzo Johnson, 188, at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium before an approximate crowd of 2,000. After an artless dancing contest in which Machen was the somewhat stumbling leader, Eddie uncorked a series of left hooks and a vicious right which sent Johnson staggering across the ring to collapse in a neutral corner after 1:12 of the 9th. It was only the second knockout loss for the 28 year old Johnson and concluded what had been a unanimous round-by-round triumph for the 31 year old Machen." -Long beach Press-Telegram
