Eddie Machen 196 lbs beat Billy Hunter 192 lbs by TKO at 2:11 in round 9 of 10

"Heavyweight contender Eddie Machen, who made a tigerish MSG debut while stopping Billy Hunter in the 9th round, may get another TV fight in the punch emporium on March 18. Machen, who has been accused of lethargy in some of his bouts, displayed aggressive ferocity Friday night as he battered lanky Hunter of Detroit with solid left hooks and smashing rights. Machen floored Billy in the 4th round, closed his right eye in the 8th and won on a TKO at 2:11 of the 9th. Referee Al Berl stopped the fight because Hunter, bleeding from the mouth, was on rubber legs and taking a severe beating in his own corner." -United Press International

  • "I'll try to get some good opponent for Eddie on the 18th. He was great last night." -Teddy Brenner, MSG matchmaker
  • "I think I've reached my peak now. In the past, I've been too tense. Now I'm more relaxed. I wouldn't take anything away from (Ingemar) Johansson. He's a great fighter. But now I think I've got the know-how to beat him." -Eddie Machen
