Pre-fight comments
- "I think Eddie Machen and his manager Sid Flaherty are crazy to take this fight. I know I can beat Machen which probably will put me back in the contenders list. So I'm glad they're crazy." -Bob Baker
- "I want to fight for the title, but if I have to wait another year to meet Patterson, well, all right. I know Floyd. I like him. I think I can beat him. But there's no hurry." -Eddie Machen
"Unbeaten Eddie Machen pounded out his 22nd straight victory Wednesday night with an unimpressive 10 round decision over durable Bob Baker in a televised fight at Chicago Stadium. Machen, 2nd ranking heavyweight, weighed 196 and Baker, now unranked but only a year ago rated as a leading challenger, weighed 214. Baker never was in contention and bled steadily from the nose for the last five rounds. He was much slower than his 25 year old opponent and Machen punched him constantly in the final rounds." -United Press

Post fight comment
- "I've lost the will to fight. This is my last fight. I'm fed up. I couldn't feint, duck or anything against Machen. I just walked in and - boom! - got hit. I was a sucker in there. When a fighter lets himself get hit, he's no longer a fighter. I've lost interest in the game. But it's a good game and has treated me well for eleven years - you can just look at me and see i haven't missed any meals." -Bob Baker
- "You're a good fighter, Eddie. I didn't give you much out there. But I can give you some advice. You won't ever win the title unless you learn to be a body puncher. You stand up straight and swing away at the head. Guys can go right up to you. If you had gone to my body some of the time, I probably couldn't have lasted." -Bob Baker to Eddie Machen
