Eddie Machen 196 lbs beat Edgardo Romero 253 lbs by KO in round 5 of 10

  • Date: 1957-09-18
  • Location: Auditorium, Portland, Oregon, USA
  • Referee: Ralph Gruman

"Eddie Machen, 196, the No. 1 heavyweight contender, used a paralyzing body attack to knock out Edgardo Romero, 253, former Argentine now fighting out of San Francisco and Reno in 46 seconds of the 5th round last night. A terrific left hook to the mid-section early in the 5th ended it as Romero sank to one knee and took the count in that position. The huge Romero was outclassed from the start, although he fought back gamely at times. The quick-punching Machen of Redding, Calif., opened the fight with an attack to the head, scoring effectively with left jabs. Late in the 1st round he landed solidly with a combination, but Romero weathered it. Romero's best round was the 3rd when he landed some solid lefts to Machen's body." -Associated Press
