"Fourth-ranked heavyweight Eddie Machen decked Garvin Sawyer four times last night while scoring a lopsided 10 round decision at Memorial Auditorium. Machen, of Redding, Calif., put Sawyer down twice in the 9th round after sending him to the canvas in the 3rd and 8th rounds. Sawyer, of Cincinnati, was bothered by a cut over the left eye from the 4th round on. In the final round, Machen almost had Sawyer down for a fifth time, but the Cincinnati fighter managed to back-peddle his way out of trouble until the bell." -United Press International
