"Eddie Machen made an impressive national television debut last night, completely befuddling Cuban Julio Mederos in earning an unanimous 10 round decision before a near-capacity crowd at the grand opening of San Francisco Garden. Machen, amazingly fast for his 193 pounds, kept a sharp left jab in Mederos' face all night, throwing the Cuban off balance. The young Californian's footwork and bobbing and weaving defense made Mederos miss consistently with a roundhouse right." -Associated Press
