"In one of the greatest action-packed heavyweight battles ever seen in the Southland, Manuel Ramos, 23, the Mexican champion, boosted his chances of recognition with his upset victory over Eddie Machen. Machen, 33, using his experience effectively, had all the best of it in the early rounds, but the complexion of the fight changed suddenly at the outset of the 8th round when Ramos dropped Machen for an eight-count. Machen, his left eye closing fast and his nose bleeding badly, was staggered again by a vicious left early in the 9th round and was wobbly for a minute or so before fighting back. Both fighters were hurt in the final round." -Long Beach Press-Telegram
