Eddie Machen 197 lbs beat Mike DeJohn 205 lbs by TKO at 1:09 in round 9 of 10

"Swift-punching Eddie Machen knocked out Mike DeJohn in 1:09 of the 9th round in their nationally televised bout at the War Memorial last night. Machen carried far too much firepower for the Syracuse heavyweight, who seemed in good condition at 204 1/2 pounds, but who still seemed to be trying to win without using his right hand. Machen had no compunction about using both hands, and he used them so skillfully that he had Mike bleeding from the nose midway through the 4th round. The end came with three knockdowns in the 9th, though referee Arthur Mercante seemed to be moving in to stop the fight when the third knockdown occurred." -Syracuse Post-Standard

  • After this bout the IRS attached Machen's $7,500 purse, citing liens were filed for $6,345 taxes on 1959 income and $1,581 for taxes on 1960 income.
