"Eddie Perkins stopped the one-time No. 1 contender for the lightweight crown, Joey Lopes, with a 7th round TKO last night, perhaps to earn a title shot himself against champion Joe Brown. Perkins was in control throughout the last night's nationally televised bout and swarmed over his foe for 40 seconds of the 7th round before referee Joey White halted the match. The best punch of the fight was a solid right to the head by Perkins in the 6th, and he said 'I couldn't figure out why he wouldn't fall down.'" -United Press International
