"Former world junior welterweight champion Eddie Perkins of Chicago, stopped Mel Ferguson after the 8th round last night in the scheduled 10 round main event of the Strip Fight of the Week at the Hacienda Hotel. Referee Harry Krause stopped the bout just after ending the 8th round with Ferguson bleeding seriously from his left eye. Just before the end of the round Perkins, 144, knocked down Ferguson with a right to the head. Ferguson wobbled to his feet at the count of four and the bell rang at eight. Ferguson held his own through the first three rounds keeping Perkins at long range with a stiff left jab. Perkins solved the style in the 4th round and started landing lefts and rights before Ferguson could counter. Perkins was in command from the 4th through the 8th rounds when the bout was stopped." -Las Vegas Sun
