"Chicago's Eddie Perkins pecked away steadily in a monotonous lightweight scrap for a 10 round split decision over Paulie Armstead of Los Angeles in the Chicago Stadium Wednesday night. There were no knockdowns in the dispirited scrap witnessed by a national TV audience. Armstead, who suffered his 5th defeat against 24 victories and a draw, was cut over both eyes early in the bout. However, there was no appreciable damage done as both little scrappers banged away inaccurately when they shot from long range and for the most part hugged and wrestled. Perkins won by spearing Armstead occasionally with stinging rights and lefts. The Chicago scrapper never let Armstead get set for any damaging combinations." -Associated Press
- Unofficial AP scorecard - 47-46 Perkins
Post-fight comments
- "I don't know what was wrong with me. I just couldn't do anything inside, and I was inside a lot. I don't know whether Perkins was that good, or I was that bad. But I fought a lousy fight." -Paul Armstead
- "I could feel it turn in the 6th round. Of course, I cut his eye early, and he was protecting it with his guard high after that, which is why I went to the body." -Eddie Perkins
