Doyle missed a punch, fell outside of the ring and was counted out. "Frenzied efforts were made to get him back in the ring, but to no avail. 'Eight, nine, out.' Referee C.B. Thomas signalled that the fight was over and declared Phillips the winner after 1 min 20 sec of the second round.
