PROVIDENCE -- Edward "Buddo" Sylvia, 79, of Cadillac Drive, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of Catherine (O'Brien) Sylvia of Rumford. Born in Wareham, Mass., May 5, 1922, a son of the late Manuel and Serafina (Rogers) Sylvia, he had lived in Wareham for most of his life. He had been employed as a merchant seaman and a longshoreman. Mr. Sylvia was a member of Local 1329. He also had been self-employed and owned Vincent's Restaurant in New Bedford, Mass., General Construction Co. in Providence for seven years and Vincent's Auto Sales in San Diego. He was a community activist in the 1960s in Providence and also was a professional boxer. Survivors include six sons, William Sylvia and Vincent Lopes of Providence, Bernard Sylvia of New Bedford, Patrick Lopes of Cranston, Vincent O'Brien of Rumford and Michael Lopes; four daughters, Diane Champlin of East Providence, Mary Harrison of Providence, Nina Sylvia of Columbia, Md., and Crystal O'Brien of Rumford.
