Eddie Smith, Sporting Editor of the Oakland Tribune newspaper during the early 1900s, was also a well-known boxing referee.

In July of 1911 it was reported Smith had had a nervous breakdown and was sent to Nauheim sanatorium near Oakland to recover. While there, his father was injured in a street accident and died from his injuries. In August Smith was moved to Providence Hospital suffering from what was termed "brain fever". Sept 6 it was reported he had died at 7:30 that morning.
