Eduardo Lausse 159 lbs beat Chico Varona 155 lbs by KO in round 7 of 10

  • Date: 1954-05-07
  • Location: St. Nicholas Arena, New York, New York, USA
  • "Eduardo Lausse of Argentina has a wicked left hook but Cuba's Chico Varona claims he has more trouble with the kind of salve Lausse uses on his cuts. Lausse was protecting a gash over his right eye and trailing on the official scorecards Friday night when he knocked out Chico with a left to the jaw at 2:43 of the 7th round at St. Nick's Arena. The nationally broadcast and televised bout was scheduled to go 10 rounds. But Lausse finished Varona with a tiger-like fury after stepping up the pace because he feared referee Barney Felix might stop the bout due to the gash over his eye. The Cuban welterweight champion was out cold. After he revived he said in Spanish that the salve Lausse had on the cut had blinded him and changed the tide of the fight. His manager backed his complaint." -United Press

    • "The salve got in Chico's eyes. It definitely blinded him. We're having the commission doctor analyze it." -Bobby Gleason, Varona's manager

    • Within a half hour of the complaint, Dr. Alexander Schiff, the commission physician, stated that the salve used by the Lausse corner was perfectly legal and couldn't blind anyone.
