"World flyweight champion Efren Torres of Mexico hammered out a close but unanimous decision over Japan's Susumu Hanagata Friday night in a 15 round title bout. Torres, making his first title defense, had to come back from early trouble to beat the speedy challenger from Yokohama. The turning point came in the 9th round when the champion scored with four consecutive rights to the head that had Hanagata hanging on. The champion's left eye was cut in round four and bled heavily that round and the next, but excellent work by Torres' cornermen closed it and there was no further problem. Hanagata was pounded about both eyes and both were badly swollen by the end of the fight. There were no knockdowns, although a couple of times it was close for both boxers." -Associated Press
