"Efren (Alacran) Torres, flyweight champion of Mexico, Sunday night won a unanimous 10-round decision over Filipino flyweight champ Leo Zulueta. More than 12,000 fans witnessed the fight in the 'El Progreso' Bull Ring. Zulueta was at his best in the 4th, 5th and 10th rounds but Torres appeared superior in the other seven. In the 4th, Zulueta cut the Mexican's left brow with a hard straight right. Zulueta showed skill and ruggedness in avoiding most of Torres' dangerous body blows and in weathering those that did land." -United Press International

• American promoter George Parnassus had set up an elimination tourney with the winner of Torres v Zulueta meeting the winner of Hiroyuki Ebihara v Fabian Esquivel (which was won by Ebihara) with the eventual winner getting a shot at the title. He then matched the winners in L.A., which was won by Ebihara. However, Ebihara would not receive a title shot for another 2 years.
