Elmer W. Ferguson (1885-April 26, 1972) was the Sports Editor of the Montreal Daily Herald (Montreal, QC, Canada) from the very early 1920s until at least the 1950s. His "The Gist and Jest of It" column ran in that newspaper for many years.
And he was the founding Secretary of the Montreal Athletic Commission in 1922.
Although quite knowledgeable about most sports, Ferguson took a special interest in boxing and ice hockey. To this day, the Hockey Hall of Fame annually presents its Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award "in recognition of distinguished members of the newspaper profession whose words have brought honour to journalism and to hockey."
