"Emile Griffith of New York out-sped slugger Florentino Fernandez of Cuba at close quarters Thursday night for a unanimous 10 round decision at MSG. Fernandez was warned in almost every round for holding when he tried to tie up his faster opponent at close quarters. The referee took the 2nd round away from the Cuban for a low left hook and he took away the 5th round for repeated holding. Fernandez suffered a gashed left brow in the 1st round, a bloody cut from his mouth down the right side of his chin, suffered in the 7th round and his left ear was swollen and bloody. Griffith staggered Fernandez with a right to the chin in the 1st round and twice in the 7th with rights to the head. Fernandez buckled Griffith's knees in the 6th session and had him half-sitting on the ropes after a bombardment of left hooks to the head. He again buckled Griffith's knees in the 9th with a left hook and hurt him twice with rights." -United Press International
- Unofficial UPI scorecard - 6-3-1 Griffith
- Due to the severity of the lip to chin cut suffered by Fernandez, ringside physician Dr. Alexander Schiff sent Fernandez to St. Clare's Hospital so the wound could be treated properly.
