Emile Griffith 146 lbs beat Gaspar Ortega 146 lbs by TKO at 0:48 in round 12 of 15

"Emile Griffith of New York retained his world welterweight championship Saturday night when he dealt a savage beating to game Gaspar Ortega of Mexico and stopped him in the 12th round of their scheduled 15-round fight. Referee Tommy Hart stopped the one-sided bout after 48 seconds of the 12th to spare the challenger further punishment. Griffith knocked Gaspar down twice for eight-counts in the turbulent 7th round that had the 7,000 or more fans in the Olympic Auditorium in an uproar. The gallant Mexican put on quite a show in the 11th and appeared to have a shade the better of it until a few seconds before the round ended when Griffith let loose his lethal left and sent Ortega clutching the ropes as the bell sounded. Ortega was bleeding from cuts over both eyes and the nose in the 12th until he could go no farther." -Associated Press
