"Stanley 'Kitten' Hayward scored an upset, split decision Tuesday night over former welterweight and middleweight champion Emile Griffith in their 10-round bout at the Spectrum. Hayward's surprise victory earned him a possible shot at the middleweight crown of Nino Benvenuti, a prize both fighters sought avidly. Hayward piled up an early lead over Griffith. The former champ rallied in the later rounds using his experience to advantage, but the clock ran out on him. The all-out effort in the 10th had both fighters tired when the bell sounded but neither was marked. There were no knockdowns in the fast-moving bout." -United Press International
- Unofficial AP scorecard (the UPI did not offer a score) - 48-43 Griffith
- Unofficial Boxing Illustrated scorecard - 46-44 Griffith
- Gil Clancy, Griffith's manager, claimed he had received an anonymous call Tuesday afternoon prior to the fight that Hayward would be receiving help from the officials. Citing afterwards Zack Clayton's score of 5-5 in the 10th round, which (according to the AP) Griffith won handily.
- Promoter Lou Luchese promised Hayward before the bout that if he won he would offer welterweight champ Curtis Cokes $50,000 to defend his title against Hayward.
- George Katz, Hayward's manager, stated he wanted Hayward to fight as a middleweight from this point on due to weight making issues, however, for a shot at Cokes, he would dry him out to 147.
