Emmett Weller won the Minnesota Lightweight title from Mysterious Billy Smith on March 17, 1941 at the St. Paul Auditorium. Smith was the favorite, but Weller's relentless windmill attacks prevailed and bothered his Minneapolis rival, as he hurt Smith badly to the body in the very first round, and had him hurt on several more occasions before the bout was over.

After his fighting career was over, Weller started his own fence company, and managed and trained many of the best boxers in St. Paul from the 1940s through the 1970s until his death in 1982. He is remembered as one of the best trainers and managers in Minnesota boxing history. Among the many fighters he handled was his own son, Don Weller, who himself also won a state title at Welterweight.
