"Alfonso Lopez of Panama hammered out a 15 round TKO over Erbito Salavarria of the Philippines to capture the WBA flyweight crown Friday night at Araneta Coliseum. He stretched his unbeaten ring record to 24 victories as he slammed Salavarria down to the canvas twice, once in the 14th round for an eight count and for the final time in the 33rd second of the 15th round when the Filipino was unable to continue. Lopez was clearly the aggressor almost throughout the fight. He scored effectively and repeatedly with a left-right combination, the kind that put down Salavarria for good." -United Press International
- All three officials - referee Carlos Padilla, judge Artemio Cruz and judge Alfredo Quiazon - had the fight scored 66-62 in favor of Lopez at the time of the stoppage.

- Lopez' purse - $10,000
- Promoter Lope Sorreal, Jr., after the bout, offered Lopez an $85,000 purse to defend his title against the Philippines Orlando Javierto in three months time. The fight, however, did not come off.
