"Erbito Salavarria of the Philippines Tuesday night retained his WBA flyweight championship by scoring a split 15-round decision over challenger and former champion Susumu Hanagata of Japan. There were no knockdowns in the fight before 8,500 at the Yokohama Cultural Gymnasium. Salavarria succeeded in the first defense of the title which he won from Hanagata last April on a split decision in Toyama, Japan." -United Press International

  • This bout had been rescheduled twice before taking place. It was first scheduled for July 1st, but was postponed to September 30th because Salavarria injured his hand in training. Then officials of the Philippine Boxing Commission as well as matchmaker Lope Sorreal stated they would not be able to make it to Japan on the date due to the annual WBA convention, which was being held in Manila from September 30 to October 4th. It was then rescheduled for Yokohama for October 7th.
