"Ernie (Indian Red) Lopez, the No. 1 contender for the world welterweight championship improved his chances for a title shot against champion Curtis Cokes Monday night at the Silver Slipper Ballroom by stopping Doug McLeod in the 4th round of a scheduled 10 round main event. Lopez, Pasadena, Calif., outboxed and outpunched his Grand Rapids, Mich., opponent through 3 1/2 rounds until referee Mike Kaplan stopped the contest at 1:47 of the 4th. McLeod was in trouble throughout the short bout. At the start of the 4th he was staggered by a short right, staggered again by a left to the head and was practically defenseless when the referee called a halt to the hostilities.
