  • "Ernie Schaaf belted his way to a 15 round decision over Paulino Uzcudun Monday night in a rough and tumble duel starting a new round of eliminations to determine the present standing of the various heavyweight pretenders. There were no knockdowns and aside from free-punching flurries in the 9th, 14th and 15th rounds, the two punchers were content to lock heads and massage each other about the waists. With the final bell only three minutes away and the tiny crowd booing both impartially, Ernie cut loose with a two-fisted attack that wobbled Paulino, added to the cuts he had gathered about the eyes, nose and mouth through the earlier sessions, and threatened him with the first knockout of his long career. The time was too short, however, and Paulino finished erect, though badly shaken and chopped up." -Associated Press
