"Esteban DeJesus, attacking with sudden swiftness in the 11th round, knocked out Mexican-born challenger Vicente Saldivar Saturday night to retain his WBC lightweight title. The Puerto Rican, in his 3rd title defense, opened strongly and the 23 year old challenger never was able to put together an offense. As the 11th round opened, the fighters exchanged flurries in mid-ring, with the 26 year old champion landing the more powerful punches. DeJesus stunned Saldivar twice and then drew blood with a right uppercut. As Saldivar moved in, DeJesus wailed him with a right hand and a left hook, sending him reeling to the canvas at 2:20 of the round. As Saldivar hit the canvas, it was apparent to the crowd of some 5,000 that he would not get up." -Reuters
Purses: DeJesus - $90,000, Saldivar - $25,000
