"Ezzard Charles, Cincinnati light heavyweight, toppled Jimmy Bivins from the leading heavyweight contenders ranks by slamming out a unanimous 10 round decision over his heavier opponent before 4,791 fans at the Gardens tonight. Bivins, weighing 186 - 11 pounds heavier than Charles - appeared off in his timing as he missed a a number of punches. The Cleveland battler flashed his old form only in the 3rd round when he caught Ezzard with a short right to the jaw and felled him for a nine count. It was the only knockdown of the fight. Bivins took the 8th and 9th with surging rallies, but this failed to offset the earlier rounds which Charles won by superior punching. In the last round the fighters dug in, giving no quarter. Bivins, making an obvious bid to capture the decision, went all out with a series of right uppercuts but Charles held his own with counter punches." -United Press
