"Federico Thompson rallied Saturday night to gain a unanimous decision over Mexico's Gaspar Ortega in a bristling televised 10 rounder at MSG. A storm of boos greeted the verdict which protected Thompson's Dec. 10 title shot with welterweight champion Benny Paret of Cuba. Thompson, 32, had to go all out against the 24 year old Mexican who gave it all he had for the full 10 rounds in a bid for a dramatic upset. There were no knockdowns although Thompson was trying throughout the fight to put the iron-jawed Mexican away with one punch. He landed his best punches but couldn't floor his game rival." -Associated Press
- The AP stated that a loss would have cost Thompson his title shot, which had already been postponed once before.
