Yelavich sustained a badly split lip after being knocked down for a nine-count in the 8th round by a short right hand. Yelavich survived the follow up attack by Armstrong, but the referee examined the injury between rounds and stopped the bout.
Yelavich had boxed strongly in the 6th and 7th rounds, after Armstrong had an edge earlier in the bout.
